For a power cable intended for use in Germany and many European applications, the mains plug, appliance connection, power rating, protective earth conductor, cable length and cable construction must all be compatible. In addition, the technical specifications and approval marks for the respective product must be taken into account.

What should you look out for when making your selection?
Mains plugs and protective earth
Firstly, you must establish whether the appliance requires a protective earth conductor. Appliances in the relevant protection class require a connection cable designed for this purpose. For appliances with protective insulation, 2-pole connection solutions may be used, provided this complies with the appliance’s specifications.
IEC equipment socket
The connection on the appliance determines the required IEC appliance connector. Typical pairings include, for example, C14 to C13, C16 to C15, C20 to C19, C6 to C5 and C8 to C7.
Current requirement and cross-section
The conductor cross-section alone does not determine the maximum load that a connection cable may carry. The mains plug, appliance coupler, cable, rated values, cable length and the approval status of the complete product must all be compatible.
Design and location of use
Depending on the project, straight or angled plugs, different colours, halogen-free LSZH cables, particularly robust cable types or an open cable end may be appropriate.

Frequently asked questions about national mains cables
What is the difference between a Euro plug and a CEE 7/7 earthed plug?
The Euro plug (Type C) is a 2-pin connector without a protective earth conductor and is used with insulated appliances designed for this purpose. CEE 7/7 is an earthed version with a protective earth contact for appliances that require a protective earth conductor. The appliance specification is decisive.
Which power cable do I need for a C14 appliance socket?
An IEC 60320 C14 appliance socket is connected to the mains lead via a C13 appliance plug. In addition, the power requirement, cable length, cross-section, cable type and the technical specifications of the specific cable must be taken into account.
When do I need a C15 instead of a C13?
C15 is combined with a C16 appliance socket and is intended for applications with higher temperature requirements at the connector. A C13 power cable should therefore not be selected as a replacement solely on the basis of its similar design.
When is a C19 power cable used?
C19 is combined with a C20 equipment input and is used, for example, with higher-power IT, server, PDU or UPS equipment. Actual suitability depends on the rated values and technical specifications of the equipment and the connection cable.
What are the advantages of coloured power cables?
Coloured power cables can visually identify circuits, equipment, workstations or A/B power paths. This can simplify installation, maintenance, servicing and documentation.
When is it advisable to use halogen-free LSZH power cables?
LSZH versions can be used where project, building or operator specifications impose specific requirements regarding smoke and halogen emission. The relevant project specification is decisive.
