C14 to C15 extension leads for hot-plug devices

DINIC extension leads from MAG GmbH connect an existing IEC power supply to appliances with an IEC 60320 C16 socket. The extension cables are fitted with a C14 plug and a C15 socket and are available in various lengths, conductor cross-sections and colours.

The C15 connector is designed for use with IEC C16 ‘hot’ equipment connections. Its mechanical coding distinguishes it from the classic C13 ‘cold’ equipment connector.

What does C14 to C15 mean?

IEC C14 refers to the plug on the extension lead, whilst IEC C15 refers to the socket on the other end of the cable. The C15 socket is normally intended for appliances with an IEC C16 socket.

Does a C15 connector fit into a C16 socket?

Yes. IEC C15 and IEC C16 form the standard power appliance plug connection. The C15 connector is plugged into a corresponding C16 appliance socket.

Can a C13 connector be used on a C16 socket?

No. The C16 socket has a mechanical coding system which prevents a standard C13 ‘cold appliance’ plug from being inserted. A C15 plug is usually used with a C16 socket.

Can a C15 plug also be used on a C14 socket?

Mechanically, this is possible. However, it is also necessary to check whether the cable used is suitable for the specific application in terms of current-carrying capacity, voltage, conductor cross-section, temperature requirements and approval.

What conductor cross-section should I choose?

Depending on the model, extension leads for hot appliances are available in sizes including 3 × 0.75 mm² and 3 × 1.0 mm², amongst others. The choice depends on the current draw, cable length, operating conditions and the specifications of the connected appliance.

Why are extension leads for hot appliances available in different colours?

Different cable colours make it easier to identify devices, circuits and power supply routes. Coloured cables can simplify maintenance, identification and troubleshooting, particularly in server racks, plant rooms and industrial facilities.

What is the difference between C13 and C15?

C13 is the standard cold-equipment connector and is typically paired with a C14 plug. C15 is designed for higher temperature requirements and features additional mechanical coding. Its standard counterpart is the IEC C16 equipment connector.
