Choosing a USB extension cable: passive, active or for installation?
The key factor is whether you want to extend a freely accessible connection or permanently attach a socket to the device. The connection type is the same for all these versions; the length, signal processing and mounting differ.

Four selection criteria for your installation
- Connections: The plug requires a USB-A socket on the computer or hub. The extended socket accommodates a USB-A plug.
- Total length: Consider the extension, the existing connection cable and any other connectors together. Choose the appropriate length to suit the actual cable route.
- Device requirements: Check the USB version and power requirements of the peripheral. A repeater does not replace a check of the entire connection.
- Installation and procurement: Clarify mounting requirements and installation space; for recurring requirements, also specify the item number, packaging type and quantity.
Frequently asked questions about USB extension cables
What does ‘USB-A plug to USB-A socket’ mean?
The cable has different connectors at each end: a plug for the existing USB-A port and a socket for the device or its connection cable. It is an extension cable, not a cable with two USB-A plugs. Typical applications include compatible keyboards, mice, barcode scanners and USB dongles.
Can I use several USB extension cables in series?
Additional extension cables increase the total length and the number of connections. It is not possible to make a general assumption about reliable operation in such cases. Even an active extension cable does not allow for an unlimited length. Check the entire connection with the intended peripheral and observe its specifications.
Will a USB flush-mounted socket with a 26 mm screw spacing fit into any front panel?
No. The screw spacing only describes the mounting points. The cut-out, panel thickness, screw length and space behind the bezel must also be compatible with the socket. Furthermore, a screw-mounted socket is not automatically sealed against dust or water.
Can I connect the installation cable directly to a motherboard header?
The installation cables offered here have a USB-A plug on the system side. You will need a suitable USB-A socket there. An internal motherboard pin header is a different connection; a connection designed for this purpose is required.
Will I achieve USB 3.0 data transfer rates with this?
No. The extension cables and installation cables described here are designed for USB 2.0. If your application requires USB 3.0, the entire connection and both devices must be equipped accordingly. Please check the USB 3.0 cables and extension cables for this purpose.
