Which USB extension cable is suitable for your setup?

For a free-laying connection, choose a suitable USB extension cable. If the socket is to be permanently fitted to a front panel, you will need a USB mounting cable with a screw-on USB-A socket. An active version with integrated signal conditioning is available for a 5-metre extension.

What does ‘USB-A plug to USB-A socket’ mean?

The USB-A plug is inserted into the USB-A port on the computer or hub. The USB-A socket accepts the plug from your device or its connection cable. This allows you, for example, to position the connection for a keyboard, mouse, barcode scanner or USB dongle in a more accessible location.

What is the difference between active and passive USB extension cables?

A passive extension cable does not feature active signal processing. The active 5-metre version contains a repeater to process the USB signal. Choose the version that suits the planned distance and the connected peripherals. An active extension cable does not provide an infinitely extendable connection.

What length should I take into account when planning?

Take both the extension cable and the existing device cable into account. Additional connectors and hubs should also be included in the planned connection. Select the length based on the actual route and check your device’s specifications. For devices powered via USB, you must also take the available power supply into account.

When do I need a USB mounting cable?

A mounting cable is suitable if the USB socket is to be permanently attached to a front panel, device bezel or housing. The mounting cables on offer have a screw spacing of 26 mm. Before installation, also check the cut-out in the housing, the space behind the bezel and the cable routing against the product dimensions or drawing. A USB-A socket is required on the system side.

Is a USB 2.0 extension cable suitable for USB 3.0 data rates?

A USB 2.0 extension cable does not provide a USB 3.0 data connection. If your application requires USB 3.0, select a suitably rated connection from the USB 3.0 cables category and check the connectors at both ends.
