Choosing the right fibre optic clearance stock – check the fibre type, connectors and application

Fibre optic clearance stock can be a cost-effective solution if the existing fibre optic technology matches the specifications on offer exactly. It is therefore worth checking available stock levels, particularly for maintenance, spare parts, existing installations, short-term projects or specific special runs.

However, unlike with a standard product range, different fibre classes and connector types may be offered within a single clearance stock category. The technical specifications of each individual item are therefore crucial.

When are fibre optic clearance stock items particularly worthwhile?

Replacements for existing installations

For example, if an existing installation uses OS1 single-mode with LC or SC connectors and exactly this technology is still required.

Short-term project requirements

When a suitable pre-terminated cable length is available straight away and no special custom-made solution is required.

Special and remaining quantities

Which fibre-optic cables are included in the clearance stock?

Do not confuse single-mode and multimode: a cheap clearance item only makes sense if the fibre is compatible with the existing optical infrastructure. An OM3 multimode cable is not a substitute for an OS1/OS2 single-mode link – and vice versa.

OS1 single-mode – when is a clearance item a sensible choice?

A large proportion of the end-of-line stock currently on offer is labelled OS1 single-mode 9/125 µm. Such cables may be of particular interest if an existing, older single-mode infrastructure uses precisely this specification and is to be kept in operation or expanded.

For completely new installations, however, you should check whether a modern OS2 single-mode infrastructure is the more suitable choice in the long term.

Important for existing networks: do not assume that every single-mode variant is technically identical simply because the fibre diameter is 9/125 µm. For existing links, the fibre class, transceiver, wavelength and project-specific requirements should be taken into account.

LC/LC or SC/SC – which clearance stock do I need?

The connector combination must match the actual connectors in the existing installation.

What is an OM3 armoured cable?

Alongside the OS1 clearance stock, the category currently also includes OM3 50/125 µm multimode armoured cables with LC/LC connectors. According to the product description, these versions feature an LSZH sheath and additional rodent protection.

This distinguishes them significantly from a standard short fibre-optic patch cable. Whether such a robust special version is suitable for a specific installation route should be determined by referring to the full technical product description.

The term ‘armoured cable’ does not automatically imply direct burial. Terms such as ‘armouring’ or ‘rodent protection’ describe specific mechanical properties. For outdoor, conduit or direct burial installation, the product’s specific technical approvals must be checked.

End-of-line stock or standard OM4 range?

Clearance stock is particularly attractive if the available product is a precise technical fit. For new installations, standardised roll-outs or projects involving long-term replenishment, however, a current, consistent product range is often more sensible.

When is a standard product range preferable?

  • when larger quantities of the same type are required
  • if regular reorders are planned for the future
  • when a new OM4 infrastructure is being set up
  • when standardised cable colours, lengths and documentation are important
  • when a specific outdoor or building-to-building solution is required

What does LSZH mean?

Many of the fibre-optic clearance stock items on offer feature an LSZH sheath – Low Smoke Zero Halogen. These are halogen-free cable designs that produce less smoke than traditional PVC-sheathed cables.

This is particularly relevant for professional building, plant room and IT installations.

Why are clearance stocks of interest for maintenance?

In existing IT and building installations, the very latest fibre class is not always required. What matters most is that a replacement part is compatible with the existing infrastructure.

Particularly in the case of older single-mode links, an existing OS1 end-of-line stock may therefore be more suitable for maintenance, replacement, spare cables or extensions to existing systems than replacing the entire system.

What are fibre optic clearance stock items?

Are all fibre optic clearance items single-mode?

No. In addition to OS1 single-mode cables, this category currently also includes OM3 multimode armoured cables. You should therefore check the fibre class for each item.

What does OS1 9/125 µm mean?

OS1 refers to a single-mode fibre class. 9/125 µm roughly describes the core diameter and the cladding diameter of the optical fibre. For new installations, you should also check whether OS2 is the more suitable current single-mode solution.

Can I use an OS1 cable for OM4?

No. OS1 is single-mode, whilst OM4 is multi-mode. The two fibre types are designed for different optical systems and should not be regarded as interchangeable patch cables.

Can I connect OM3 and OM4 together?

OM3 and OM4 are both 50/125 µm multimode fibres and can, in principle, be connected in a multimode link. The power budget should then be calculated based on the section with the lower power capacity.

When do I need LC/LC?

LC/LC is suitable if both endpoints of the fibre-optic connection have LC connectors and the other technical parameters also match.

When do I need SC/SC?

SC/SC is used when both endpoints have SC connectors, for example with corresponding patch panels, distribution frames or older fibre-optic installations.

Are clearance stock items suitable for new installations?

Yes, provided the specific product is technically and quantitatively suitable for the project. However, for larger installations or those standardised over the long term, a regularly available, up-to-date product range may be more advantageous.

Can I reorder a clearance item later?

This cannot be guaranteed. Remaining stock is only available in limited quantities and may no longer be available once it has been completely sold out.

Is an armoured fibre-optic cable automatically suitable for outdoor use?

Not automatically. The mechanical protective construction alone does not replace a specific assessment of suitability for outdoor use, installation in conduit or underground laying. The technical specifications of the individual product are decisive.
