Technical guide to NEMA 6-20P

NEMA 6-20P, 20 A / 250 V, C13 and C19 explained in detail

What does a NEMA 6-20P plug look like? Which socket is required? What distinguishes NEMA 6-20P from NEMA 5-15P, and why isn’t every NEMA 6-20P cable automatically suitable for 20 A? You’ll find the answers in our comprehensive guide.

NEMA 6-20P to C13 or C19 – which connection is correct?

The appliance connection and the permissible current rating must be suitable for the application. It is not just the NEMA 6-20P mains plug that matters, but the technical design of the entire connection cable.

Design Cable Max. current Suitable appliance input
NEMA 6-20P → IEC C13 AWG14 / SJT up to 15 A IEC C14
NEMA 6-20P → IEC C19 AWG12 / STOW up to 20 A IEC C20

Important: NEMA 6-20P does not automatically mean 20 A for the entire power cable

The NEMA 6-20P plug is part of a 20 A plug system. However, the actual permissible current-carrying capacity of the complete connection cable is determined by all the components used.

For this reason, the NEMA 6-20P to C13 version offered here, with AWG14/SJT, is specified for a maximum of 15 A. The higher-capacity NEMA 6-20P to C19 version with AWG12/STOW is specified for up to 20 A. Further information can be found in the NEMA 6-20P guide .

NEMA 6-20P and NEMA 5-15P – do not confuse them

NEMA 5-15P and NEMA 6-20P are different North American plug systems. NEMA 5-15P is typically used for 125 V applications, whilst NEMA 6-20P is intended for 250 V applications up to 20 A.

The pin configuration also differs. A NEMA 6-20P plug is therefore not designed for a standard NEMA 5-15R socket. You can find an illustration of the plug and the pin configuration on our NEMA 6-20P information page.

Typical applications for NEMA 6-20P

Servers & IT High-performance IT, server and network systems.
PDU & Infrastructure Professional power distribution and rack applications.
Industry Equipment and systems with corresponding power requirements.
Laboratory & Test Technology Equipment and test set-ups with suitable 250 V infrastructure.

AWG 14 and AWG 12 – different conductor sizes

For North American power cables, the conductor size is specified according to AWG (American Wire Gauge). The NEMA 6-20P cables on offer differ, amongst other things, in their conductor sizing.

AWG14 / SJT NEMA 6-20P to C13 – up to a maximum of 15 A as specified in the product details.
AWG12 / STOW NEMA 6-20P to C19 – up to a maximum of 20 A, as specified in the product details.

Choosing the right NEMA 6-20P power cable

1. Mains connection Is a suitable NEMA 6-20 connection available?
2. Equipment input IEC C14 → C13 or IEC C20 → C19?
3. Current requirement Is up to 15 A required, or actually up to 20 A?
4. Approvals Observe the UL/CSA requirements for the project.

Frequently Asked Questions about NEMA 6-20P Power Cables

What is a NEMA 6-20P plug?

NEMA 6-20P is a 3-pin North American mains plug with an earth conductor, designed for a plug-in system rated up to 20 A at 250 V.

Is every NEMA 6-20P power cable suitable for 20 A?
