Which jack cable is right for your audio setup?
A 3.5 mm stereo jack cable with plug-to-plug connectors, for example, connects the headphone or line output of a source device to the corresponding AUX input on an amplifier or active speaker. When choosing a cable, you need to consider the plug diameter, number of pins, length and plug design. A connection cable with two plugs serves a different purpose to an extension cable with a plug and socket.
HQ jack cables with fabric sheathing
The black HQ series features copper conductors, dual shielding comprising aluminium foil and braided screen, and gold-plated contacts. The three-pin plugs have metal housings.
Available in lengths of 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m and 2.5 m, each supplied in a DINIC box.
Jack cables with 90° plugs
One straight and one angled plug make cable routing easier when there is limited space in front of the device socket. The variants on offer are 2 m long.
Choose Monaco in white or Premium in black. Check the product image to ensure the plug orientation and space requirements are suitable for your device.
4-pole TRRS jack cable
The 1.5 m 4-pin connection cable features two 3.5 mm plugs, copper conductors, shielding and gold-plated contacts.
The additional contact can carry a microphone signal, for example, provided the device supports this configuration. A 3-metre 4-pin extension cable is also available for use with an existing cable and plug.
Selecting the right cable length and connector
| Requirements | Suitable version | Selection guide |
|---|---|---|
| Short stereo connection | Premium jack cable in 0.5 m or 1 m | Black, straight 3.5 mm plugs at both ends, DINIC box. |
| Workplace and media technology | Stereo jack cables in 2 m, 3 m or 5 m | Black connection cables in a DINIC box; the 2-metre version is also available in a polybag. |
| Longer connection length | 10-metre stereo jack cable in black | 3.5 mm plug to plug; take into account the signal source and potential sources of interference when laying the cable. |
| White audio cables | Monaco jack cables in 0.5 m or 2 m lengths | Straight 3.5 mm stereo plugs at both ends, DINIC box. |
| Connecting 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm | 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm stereo jack, 2 m | Both plugs are three-pin. The pin configuration of the 2.5 mm connector must be compatible with the stereo version. |
What is the difference between 3-pin and 4-pin?
A TRS connector with three contacts carries left, right and earth in a standard stereo AUX connection. A TRRS connector with four contacts adds a further line, for example for a headset microphone. A three-pin stereo cable does not carry this additional microphone signal. With four-pin connections, the pin configuration of both devices must match; the cable does not automatically compensate for different pin configurations.
Is an AUX cable the same as a jack cable?
AUX refers to an additional audio connection. This often refers to an analogue 3.5 mm stereo input, which requires a three-pin jack cable. If the other device has RCA sockets, you can find suitable RCA-to-jack cables. For devices with USB-C only, a digital USB-C audio adapter is an option, provided the device supports USB audio.
What length and packaging are suitable for B2B use?
Plan the actual cable route with a little extra length to allow for movement. There is no one-size-fits-all maximum length for unbalanced stereo connections: the devices, cable construction and environment all influence the result. For specialist retailers, numerous items are available in the DINIC Box with Euro-holes; selected versions are also available in polybags or blister packs. The specific packaging is listed on the relevant product page.
