India power cables – Type C, Type D and Type M with BIS certification

Power cables for appliances and systems on the Indian market. Depending on the type of appliance and power requirements, different plug types may be suitable: Type C for suitable 2-pin devices, Type D for earthed standard applications up to 6 A, and Type M for earthed devices with a higher current rating. In addition to the plug type, the protection class, current rating, device connection and the market-compliant BIS version are also crucial.

As at 23 July 2026 Positive developments regarding BIS-certified power cables

The first BIS-certified power cables have been successfully manufactured directly in India. This improves the basis for medium-term supply planning. Further cable lengths and variants are to be tested in stages and introduced into production. As the new supply structure is still being established, delivery times and available quantities may continue to vary.

Which Indian plug? A brief guide to choosing
Type C – Indian 2-POLE version

For suitable insulated appliances without a protective earth conductor, for example those with IEC C7.

Type D BIS 6 A

Very common in India and suitable for standard earthed applications up to 6 A.

Type M up to 16 A

For earthed applications requiring a higher current capacity and often a sensible choice for IEC C13.

Important: A plug that looks similar mechanically is not necessarily a technically compliant Indian version. Particular care should be taken with Type C to distinguish between the European Type C and a version intended for use in India.

Selecting the right power cable for India, suited to the device and application

For India, it is not enough to simply consider the mechanical shape of the plug. The protective conductor, current-carrying capacity, device connection, area of use and BIS requirements should all be taken into account together.

Which plug type is suitable? Type C, Type D and Type M serve different purposes and should be selected to suit the appliance.
Selection guide for India

Type C, D or M – the key differences

  • Type C (Indian version) for suitable 2-pole appliances without a protective conductor
  • Type D for standard earthed applications up to 6 A
  • Type M for earthed applications with a higher current capacity up to 16 A
  • With IEC C13, Type M is often the more sensible solution
  • Do not assume that the European Type C and the Indian 2-pole version are always the same

AVAILABILITY New supply structure is still being established

The first BIS-certified power cables have been successfully manufactured directly in India. Further cable variants are to be tested in stages and introduced into production.

Please note: Delivery times and available quantities may vary whilst the new supply structure is being further established. The current details for each individual item are therefore decisive.

Note regarding existing items from previous production runs: For some existing Indian power cables, the note ‘No BIS certificate renewal currently available for Chinese manufacturers’ may still appear. This note relates to the previous production and certification status of the items in question.

In parallel, a new production facility has now been established directly in India. BIS certifications and test reports are available for the first cable variants produced there. Further variants are set to follow gradually. Detailed information on the current BIS situation
