Power strips
With DINIC power strips, specialist retailers, system integrators and commercial buyers can plan power distribution to suit the specific application. The range extends from 3- and 6-socket power strips with switches, through aluminium power strips with surge protection, to 19-inch power strips with 8 or 9 sockets.
The total permissible load of the selected power strip is crucial. Ensure this is compatible with the connected devices and the power supply.
For PCs, monitors and other devices with a C14 input, you will also find
power cables with an earthed plug and a C13 connector.
Power strips for 19-inch racks, UPS systems and workstations
Which power strip is right for your application?
The power supply, installation location and equipment requirements are key factors in making your choice. A multi-socket power strip at an office workstation has different requirements to a power distribution unit in a network cabinet. You should therefore compare not only the number of sockets, but also the installation method, operation and electrical load capacity.
| Model | Typical requirements | Key considerations when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| 3- or 6-socket with switch | Office workstations and peripheral devices | Socket spacing, accessible switch, suitable supply cable |
| Aluminium power strips with surge protection | Workstation and technical installations with 6 or 8 sockets | Protective functions, housing dimensions and mounting options |
| 19-inch power strips with earthed plugs | Power distribution in server, network or AV racks | 8 or 9 sockets; mounting position and features vary by model |
| 19-inch UPS power strip with C14 plug | Distribution of a suitable UPS output across 8 earthed sockets | C13 output on the UPS, permissible current and available UPS power |
Earthing socket or C14: the power supply must be compatible
Power strips with earthed plugs are connected to a suitable earthed socket. The C14 version is designed for connection to a matching C13 output socket, for example on a UPS. Check the connection type and current rating of both devices.
For additional IEC connections, there is a range of extension leads for IT equipment with various IEC connectors to choose from. Select the lead based on the plug, connector, length and permissible current.
Plan the number of sockets and total load together
Add up the power requirements of all loads operating simultaneously. The specified load capacity applies to the entire power strip, not to each socket individually. Also take into account the limitations of the supply cable and the upstream power supply. For UPS systems, the available output power and the manufacturer’s specifications are also decisive.
Take everyday installation and operation into account
In the rack, check the mounting position, the housing dimensions and the space available for plugs and cables. At the workstation, easily accessible switches and sufficient space for plug-in power supplies are important. Rotated sockets can make cable management easier; however, large power supplies still require additional space. Wall mounting and installation accessories depend on the specific model.
A switch allows you to switch connected devices on and off simultaneously. Surge protection and overload protection, on the other hand, fulfil different functions. Compare the protection functions explicitly stated for the specific product.
Frequently asked questions about power strips
Is every aluminium power strip suitable for 19-inch racks?
No. Aluminium refers to the material of the housing. For rack installation, you need a power strip specifically marketed as a 19-inch model with suitable mounting options and installation dimensions.
Does a power strip with surge protection replace a UPS?
No. Surge protection can limit voltage spikes, but it does not bridge a power cut. A UPS provides temporary power to connected devices. Even a C14 UPS power strip does not have a battery of its own.
Can I connect several power strips in series?
Do not connect power strips in series. Ensure you have sufficient sockets by using a suitably sized power distribution system. Furthermore, do not operate the power strips with their covers removed and adhere to the specified load limits.
