UK power cable, Type G to IEC C5

Mains lead with a UK Type G mains plug and an IEC 60320 C5 appliance plug for appliances with a C6 socket. The three-pin C5 connector is also known as a cloverleaf or Mickey Mouse plug due to its distinctive shape.

Both straight and 90° angled C5 versions are available. The angled version is particularly suitable for applications where there is limited space behind power supplies or devices for cable routing.

UK Type G to C5 mains lead for professional equipment and export applications

A UK Type G to IEC C5 power cable connects a British Type G socket to a device, power supply unit or system with an IEC 60320 C6 input. The corresponding C5 cable plug is three-pin and features a protective earth conductor.

Typical applications include laptop power supplies, projectors, AV equipment, IT components, medical or technical devices, as well as bespoke devices and export projects. It is always crucial that the connection type, power requirements and the approvals required for the respective target market are suitable for the specific device and product.

IEC C5 and C6 – which go together?

In these connection cables, ‘C5’ refers to the plug on the cable. This is plugged into an IEC 60320 C6 appliance socket.

Due to its distinctive three-part shape, the C5 plug is often referred to as a cloverleaf plug or a Mickey Mouse plug.

Straight or angled C5 plug?

A straight C5 plug is suitable for standard applications where there is sufficient space behind the appliance.

A side-angled C5 plug routes the cable directly to the side. This can simplify cable routing and reduce unnecessary bending radii in tight installation situations, behind furniture, in equipment enclosures or with compact power supplies.

Which UK C5 power cable is the right one?

Requirements Suitable choice
Device has an IEC C6 input Power cable with IEC-C5 plug
Connection to a UK socket Type G mains plug / UK
Sufficient space behind the device Straight C5 version
Limited space or side cable routing required 90° or side-angled C5 version
Greater distance between the socket and the appliance Select a suitable longer cable version
Export or international roll-out Check the approvals for the specific product against the relevant target market

Important for Type G power cables: check the plug shape and approval separately

The British Type G plug is also used in other countries and regions. However, the same plug shape does not automatically mean that a cable is approved for every Type G target market.

Various DINIC UK-C5 power cables feature not only approvals for the UK but also additional approvals or safety marks for international markets. The information on the relevant product page is always authoritative.

Typical applications of UK power cables with C5 plugs

C5 mains connections are used in many compact and medium-sized electrical appliances. For commercial customers, UK C5 power cables are of particular interest for:

  • Notebook and laptop power adaptors with a C6 input
  • Projectors and presentation equipment
  • AV and media equipment
  • IT and communications equipment
  • Equipment manufacturing and system integration
  • Mass-produced devices for the UK market
  • International roll-outs and export projects
  • Replacement and service cables for existing equipment

For commercial applications, in addition to the plug combination, factors such as cable length, conductor cross-section, rated current, C5 plug design, approvals and required quantities are particularly important.

If a standard version is not suitable for the application, project-specific mains connection cables can also be provided. These may include, for example, different cable lengths, plug combinations, conductor cross-sections, markings or packaging specifications.

Frequently asked questions about UK mains cables with C5 connectors

Which appliance socket is compatible with an IEC C5 plug?

An IEC 60320 C5 cable plug is connected to an IEC 60320 C6 appliance socket.

Is C5 the same as a cloverleaf or Mickey Mouse plug?

Yes. These terms are colloquially used to refer to the three-pin IEC C5 plug. The technically precise designation is IEC 60320 C5.

When is an angled C5 plug useful?

An angled version is particularly practical when there is little space behind the appliance or power supply unit, or when the cable needs to be routed specifically to the side.

Can any UK C5 cable also be used in other countries with Type G sockets?

Not solely on the basis of the plug shape. For export applications, the approvals and markings required for the specific target market must be checked against the specifications of the relevant product.
