BIS certification for India – current status regarding power cables

Following a prolonged period of limited certification and procurement options, there has been a positive development: the first BIS-certified power cables have been successfully manufactured directly in India.

Current status

The new production facility in India has got off to a successful start. The required BIS certifications and test reports are now available for the first power cables produced there. Further cable lengths and variants are to be tested in stages and brought into production.

The new supply structure is still being established. Consequently, delivery times and available quantities may vary depending on the cable variant. The current details listed for each item are always decisive for actual availability.

What has improved?

Why was BIS certification for Indian mains cables difficult?

The availability of BIS-certified power cables for India has been significantly restricted in recent years. In particular, certifications and renewals for production sites outside India were sometimes difficult to plan.

This created a difficult situation for suppliers and equipment manufacturers: even power cables that were technically unchanged and had been in use for years could be affected by missing certifications or those that had not been renewed in time.

As BIS certification must always be considered in the context of the specific cable design, the components used and the approved production facility, an existing approval cannot simply be transferred to another production site.

Our solution: production directly in India

In order to establish a more sustainable long-term supply capability, we worked with our partners to set up and implement production of selected power cables directly in India.

The first cable variants have now been successfully produced. This enables BIS certification to be carried out on the basis of an Indian production facility. This creates a better foundation for the further expansion of the product range and reduces dependence on certificate renewals from overseas plants, which are difficult to plan for.

  • The new production structure improves the foundation for future procurement and delivery planning.

Which BIS-certified Indian power cables are currently available?

Depending on availability, our range includes various Indian-specification models with Type C, Type D and Type M plugs, as well as different IEC appliance sockets.

As the new manufacturing and delivery structure is currently evolving, we have deliberately chosen not to provide a fixed list of individual available cable lengths or stock levels on this information page. This ensures that information does not become out of date due to new deliveries or changes to the product range.

Note regarding existing items from earlier production runs

For some India power cables from earlier production runs, the note “No BIS certificate renewal currently available for Chinese manufacturers” may still be displayed.

This note refers to the previous production and certification status of the relevant product. At the same time, new production facilities have now been established directly in India. The two situations should therefore be considered separately.

Gradual expansion of the Indian product range

The successful production of the first cable variants is an important step. The aim is to gradually expand the range of BIS-certified power cables manufactured in India.

However, we are not yet able to guarantee the long-term availability of all plug variants, device connectors, cable lengths and quantities at this stage.

Are BIS-certified power cables for India available again?

Yes. The first BIS-certified power cables have been successfully produced directly in India. You can see which models are currently available or due to be released in the relevant product overview.

Have all power cables for India already been switched over to the new production process?

No. The new supply structure is being rolled out gradually. Consequently, the range may include both existing items from previous production runs and new models manufactured in India.

Which Indian plugs are relevant?

Depending on the device and application, Type C, Type D and Type M are particularly suitable. In addition to the plug type, factors such as protection class, current-carrying capacity, cable and device connection must also be taken into account.
