01 · Everything must fit together

Consider the plug, cable and device together

For a project in Brazil, the specific design and the associated documentation are what count. INMETRO is the Brazilian authority responsible for the conformity assessment system; certification bodies test products within this system. A suitable plug type alone does not prove that the power cable has been approved. [1] [2]

01 / MAINS PLUG

Brazilian connection

ABNT NBR 14136 describes the Brazilian plug system. Portaria 90/2022 governs the certification of plugs and sockets within the scope of the standard. The design, rated current and supporting documentation must correspond to the product. [1] [3]

02 / CABLE

Tested and marked

The requirements of Portaria 131/2022 apply to the cables covered. These include technical testing, certification and marking. A plug approval does not replace the required certification for the cable. [2] [4]

03 / DEVICE CONNECTION

Select the correct one for the appliance

C13, C5 and C7 differ in design and application. Check the device’s input, protective earth conductor and permissible load. The approval of a power cable does not replace any approval of the connected device that may be required.

For procurement: Ensure that the item, plug configuration, cable type and cross-section can be clearly matched to the appropriate certificate. For the Brazilian market, the relevant registration requirements must also be taken into account. [5]

02 · Understanding labelling

What is printed on the cable?

The markings combine technical specifications with the identification of the certified version. The marking scheme approved by the relevant certification body is decisive. [6]

Specification	Meaning
H05VV-F	Designation of a flexible cable with PVC insulation and PVC sheath.
3G 0.75 mm²	Three conductors, including the protective conductor, each with a nominal cross-sectional area of 0.75 mm².
300/500 V	Rated voltage of the cable. The permissible load on the entire mains cable must be taken into account separately.
UL BR	In the manufacturer’s example, the marking refers to UL do Brasil. UL is a certification body within the INMETRO system. [7]
Cabo flexível circular / plano	Portuguese for flexible round cable or flexible flat cable.

Does the cable need to be technically different? The crucial factor is that the design meets the prescribed requirements. This Yung-Li document announces a change to the labelling; it does not describe any change to the material or construction. The cross-sections and voltage specifications shown remain the same. [8]

03 · Regulations and manufacturer’s dates

When did the regulations come into force?

Brazilian requirements for power cables have been in place for many years. The following overview shows documented reference points. It distinguishes between regulatory frameworks, their dates of entry into force and a manufacturer’s announced change to labelling.

2007 Plug system

Brazilian standard as a basis

INMETRO refers to ABNT NBR 14136 and Conmetro Resolution 02/2007 for the transition of domestic appliances and corresponding imported products. The requirements for Brazilian plugs therefore extend well beyond the year 2026. This is not a uniform deadline for all types of cables. [3]
23 March 2022 Date of the cable regulation

Portaria 131/2022 consolidates the regulations on cables

It covers the wires, cables and flexible cables in question, including conformity assessment and marking. Here, too, older requirements are consolidated. The date of the regulation is specified; there is no blanket cut-off date for sales. [2] [4]
1 April 2022 Plugs and sockets

Portaria 90/2022 comes into force

The regulation of 9 March 2022 consolidates the certification rules for the plugs and sockets covered. Previous regulations are superseded. The date therefore does not mark the first introduction of Brazilian certification. [1]
1 April 2026 Manufacturer transition

Yung Li announces new cable marking

The manufacturer’s notice dated 26 March 2026 specifies 1 April 2026 as the planned implementation date for the amended cable marking on the listed Brazilian versions. According to the manufacturer, cable certification has already been granted. [8]

What does this mean for older stock? The manufacturer’s deadline of April 2026 does not constitute evidence of a general Brazilian sales ban from that date onwards. This notice does not specify a binding deadline for stock bearing the old labelling. For a specific export project, the batch, certificate status and applicable transitional rules must be clarified. [8]

Key answers regarding certification

Is a Brazilian plug sufficient on a European cable?

The plug type alone is not sufficient proof. For the cables listed, the Brazilian requirements for the cable and its marking must also be met. The documentation must correspond to the specific combination. [2] [8]

Are INMETRO and UL BR the same thing?

INMETRO is the competent Brazilian authority. UL do Brasil is an accredited certification body. ‘UL BR’ may refer to certification by this body; it is not a designation for a cable type. The manufacturer must use the marking associated with the certification. [7]

How can certification be verified?

Compare the product and its specifications with the valid certificate. INMETRO refers users to its certificate database and product register for verification. Pay attention to the manufacturer, product family, listed variants and status; a printed mark alone does not replace this verification. [5]

Will older cables automatically become non-compliant from April 2026?

This cannot be inferred from the available manufacturer’s information. It describes a change in labelling and does not contain a binding general cut-off date for sales. For stock items, the specific batch and the rules applicable to the project are decisive. [8]

Are IEC extension leads generally exempt?

The absence of a Brazilian wall plug does not imply a blanket exemption for the cable. Plug regulations and cable regulations have different scopes of application. The specific design and the applicable regulations are decisive. [1] [4]
